I really don’t have time to write one of these right now, because my basement is currently flooding, but I keep missing these Friday editions and that’s unacceptable! Plus, these Fridays are supposed to be about my book, and I actually have some book news today!
So I took a break from the wet vac - honestly, the flooding is such an epidemic right now, we’re incredibly lucky that a neighbor had one to spare - to squeeze this in because I love you, even if God hates me. Seriously, we must have angered him something fierce, because he decided this September was finally time to cleanse New Yorkers from the earth! Or at least to cleanse of all their LEGO sets and stuffed animals, because that’s what’s taking most of the damage in my place.
Why does God hate my children?! Only I’m allowed to hate my children! (Follow me on Instagram for more of that!)
All joking aside (haha there is no God hahaha), this weather sucks (and it’s really intense here in Brooklyn and all over the city; stay safe out there!), and that probably has less to do with one angry, omnipotent overlord than it does with a whole bunch of corrupt political overlords who’ve been ignoring climate change for the past 40+ years. I’m no scientist but the weather this year has been fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked up and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the rains washing the filth off the streets and into my kids playroom is a direct by-product of the damage we’re doing to this planet.
Speaking of damage, my son has been a teenager for less than two weeks and it’s already wreaking havoc on my psyche, as I wrote in Wednesday’s edition. I’ve gotten a nice response to that piece, from some people who empathize and other people who sympathize and a handful of people who are surprised when I get a little serious, which I get. My policy is usually to laugh my way through, or at least rant my way through, this whole parenting thing, but sometimes even I have trouble mustering up much more than a defeated sigh.
But hey, at least it’s Friday!
And to be totally honest, even with the flooding brought on by the continues-to-come-down biblical rain storm and all the sobbing brought on by the we’ve-only-just-begun teenage years, I’m excited to share this edition of the newsletter, because, again, these Friday editions are ostensibly about my book, and today I finally have some!
